DVD: Jean Paul Belmondo: Screen Icons Detail Produk
5-disc box set highlighting the work of the effortlessly cool Jean Paul Belmondo. 'Breathless' (1960), is Jean-Luc Godard's groundbreaking tale of the brief love affair between petty criminal Michel (Belmondo) and young American student Patricia (Jean Seberg). Michel has killed a motorcycle cop and is now hiding out in Patricia's Paris apartment, but the police are getting closer, and as Michel falls deeper in love with Patricia, his time also gets shorter and shorter. Godard's film, one of the first and most important statements of the French New Wave, caused a revolution in the way films were made, opening up many new, previously untried possibilities for cinema. 'Pierrot Le Fou' (1965), is one of Godard's best films in which Ferdinand (Belmondo) leaves his wife and child and runs off with the babysitter Marianne (Anna Karina). The pair head south to find Marianne's brother, Ferdinand gets caught up in Marianne's crimes along the way as the pair spiral towards destruction. Memorable for Raoul Coutard's deep and lush photography, it offers a spontaneous musical sequence under the pine trees, elements of the gangster genre and a tragic account of the transience of love, meanwhile Godard manages to address the nature of the film medium itself. In 'Le Professionnel' , Belmondo plays French secret agent Joss Beaumont, sent to Africa to assassinate a head of state. Before he can complete his task however, the political climate changes, meaning Beaumont is sacrificed to the authorities and jailed. After escaping, he returns to France, warning his old superiors that he intends to complete his mission when the African leader arrives on a state visit. In 'Stavisky' (1974), Belmondo plays the French con-man extraordinaire, who managed to charm his way into the highest strata of French society, mainly on the back of phony bonds. Set in the period prior to WWII, the resulting financial scandal shook national confidence and came close to ending in civil war. Set in the vineyards of Provence, 'A Double Tour' (1959), concerns the death of Leda (Antonella Lualdi), who is having an affair with her neighbour, the local Patron, Henri Marceaux (Jacques Dacqmine). Henri's son and wife are both aware of the affair, indeed the son has been sampling Leda's charms for himself. Belmondo himself plays an Hungarian idler, the admirer of Henri's daughter (Jeanne Valerie).

DVD: The Neo-Realist Collection

DVD: The Neo-Realist CollectionDetail Produk
A collection of five key films from the Neo-Realist movement, which took place in 1940s and 50s Italy, inaugurating the use of lightweight 16mm cameras, a cast of non-professional actors and actual locations rather than studio sets. Roberto Rossellini's 1945 film 'Rome, Open City' is arguably the film that provided the Neo-Realist movement with its blueprint. Set in the last days of the Nazi occupation of Italy, it follows the story of a priest who is also a resistance leader. He flees the Gestapo, hides out with a pregnant girl and is eventually caught and executed. Vittorio De Sica's film 'The Bicycle Thieves' (1948) won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It tells the story of Antonio, a working-class Italian, living just above the poverty line. When he finally lands a job as a bill-sticker, his happiness is short-lived as his bicycle, essential for the promised job, is stolen. With his small son Bruno he tramps the city in a desperate search for the precious bicycle. 'Miracle in Milan' (1951), De Sica's follow-up to 'Bicycle Thieves', won the Best Film Award at Cannes in 1951. Its fairy tale-like story concerns the plight of the poor in post-WWII Italy. A group of down-and-outs are threatened with eviction by developers but manage to escape their plight after angelic intervention, thanks to a magic dove given to young orphan Toto by a fairy, which enables Toto to grant the beggars their wishes. 'Umberto D' (1952) is another hugely revered film by Vittorio De Sica, which was for years banned in Italy and labelled as subversive and negative to the country. It is a portrait of an old man, living out his last days alone and abandoned by a post-war Italian society. Non-professional Carlo Battisti plays Umberto Domenico Ferrari, a retired civil servant with no friends, family or prospects to speak of, only his dog Flike for company. Umberto lives only on his meagre pension and in dire surroundings with a grasping landlady. He has fallen behind on his rent and, after many indignities, finally reaches a point where suicide seems like the only answer. However, he puts these thoughts aside when he realises that Flike would be left to the streets if he was not there. 'I Vitelloni' (1953) is Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical story of a group of friends - I Vitelloni (the young calves) - who have grown up together in the town of Rimini. Fausto, Moraldo, Alberto, Leopaldo and Ricardo spend their days in bars and cafes, dreaming of adventure, discussing women and sponging off their parents. Only Moraldo (Fellini's alter-ego, who becomes Marcello in 'La Dolca Vita') manages to escape the small-town existence and go to Rome.

Lovers of The Arctic Circle (dir. Julio Medem)

like new
....
Basque director Julio Medem makes films like no one else's. Quirky, audacious, visually startling, they play teasing games with themes of doubling and fate. Symbolism runs riot, ironies abound, narratives stop dead to focus on seemingly absurd details--and in fact the whole shebang would risk being terminally pretentious were it not for Medem's subversive humour, inviting us into the joke and daring us to take him seriously.

Lovers of the Arctic Circle is typical of his idiosyncratic brand of free-wheeling fantasy. In Madrid, two foster-siblings grow up to find themselves gripped by irresistible, quasi-incestuous passion. Flashbacks reaching back to the Spanish Civil War show us how their destinies, those of the parents, and of their parents' lovers, have become entwined. The siblings are parted by circumstance, but seek each other out in Finland's Arctic north. Medem plays sleight-of-hand with doublings and wordplay, cutting deftly between the past, present and future, constantly challenging us to guess where he's heading next in the circling convolutions of his plot. --Philip Kemp

Husbands and Wives (dir. Woody Allen)

Like New
....
In Husbands and Wives, another typical Woody Allen exploration of relationships between screwed-up New Yorkers, the drama centres on two married couples who have been close friends for years. When Jack and Sally (Sydney Pollack and Judy Davis) announce they're breaking up, it exposes the cracks in the relationship between Gabe and Judy (Allen and Mia Farrow). The shenanigans that result are touching, funny and horribly true to life. Jack finds himself a cliché trophy blonde, Sam--an aerobics instructor--and thinks he's got it made until she expounds the eternal truths of astrology to his friends, humiliating him in the process; Gabe, meanwhile, finds himself increasingly drawn to his precocious student, Rain--beautifully portrayed by Juliette Lewis--while Judy and Sally get involved with the same guy (though not simultaneously), the shy but alluring Michael (Liam Neeson). The touch of genius is to have an off-screen narrator, with whom the main characters share their innermost thoughts, thus drawing the viewer right into the emotional heart of the movie. This is vintage Woody, with gentle but witty observations of human failings.

The Stolen Children (dir. Gianni Amelio)

Like New
....
One of the most garlanded Italian productions of the early 1990s (two Cannes prizes, the European Film Award), Gianni Amelio s intensely moving drama is one of the great European films about childhood. Young carabiniere Antonio (Enrico Lo Verso, the film s only professional actor) is charged with transporting 11-year-old Rosetta and 9-year-old Luciano to a children s home after their mother is deemed unfit to look after them. With no relevant experience, it s not a job he was looking forward to, but when things don t go according to plan, he decides to take them on a long journey from Milan to Sicily. The resulting top-to-bottom portrait of Italy acts as a backdrop to a complex psychological and emotional study of children slowly learning to trust an adult for the first time in their troubled lives. But do the authorities trust Antonio?

The Tree Of Wooden Clogs (dir. Ermanno Olmi)

Like New

A three-hour peasant epic in which nothing very much happens might sound like the ultimate turn-off; but The Tree of Wooden Clogs ("L'Albero degli Zoccoli") is made with so much love and dedication that it rarely flags. Set in the Lombardy countryside in the closing years of the 19th century, the film traces the interconnected lives of four peasant families all living in the same large farmhouse. The most dramatic event, which gives the movie its title, is when a father chops down a tree so that his son can have clogs in which to walk to school, which leads to quiet tragedy in the final reel.

The film's director Ermanno Olmi--himself of North Italian peasant stock--based his subject on incidents from his own childhood and tales told him by his grandfather. His cast were non-professionals, real peasants chosen from villages of the Bergamo region, whom he encouraged to improvise their own dialogue. All the shooting was done on location with a 16 mm camera, using natural lighting and direct sound--a revolutionary approach in Italy at the time, when almost all films were studio-bound and heavily dubbed. The results carry a rare conviction, the unselfconsciously simple speech and muted earth-tones of the visuals make the film feel more like documentary than fiction.

The hardships of peasant life are never softened, though now and then Olmi's affection for his characters verges on sentimentality. And the unquestioning, submissive Catholicism of director and characters alike tends to cloy. But the sense of dignity and harmony, and the film's unhurried pace, always in step with the seasons, create a moving celebration of a vanished way of life. The Tree of Wooden Clogs took the Palme d'Or at the 1978 Cannes Film Festival.
